Christian Horner: Red Bull Racing open for Mark Webber – Formula 1 news
Rumours were that the 34-year-old Australian Mark Webber will retire at the end of 2011 season mainly because of his age and the fact that he and his 23-year-old Partner teammate and current champion Sebastian Vettel do not share a good relationship.
However, Red Bull team Principal Christian Horner has said in an interview that, “Mark isn't approaching this year like it's his final year. If he's delivering at the same level, why not?”
Red Bull are facing somewhat crucial time as their prime driver and the world champion Sebastian Vettel has said twice in a month that he wants to drive for Ferrari one day. If this happens, and Vettel leaves next year, Red Bull will be left with two empty
seats. Surely, they would not want to have two fresh drivers in their cars.
Alan Jones, the only Australian champion in 1980, said about Webber that Red Bull are looking very anxious to keep him in such circumstances and that, “If he's (Webber) still motivated and still quick enough, and there's not reason to suggest that he won't
be, I can't see why he won't go again next year.”
Webber will be starting his fifth consecutive championship campaign with Red Bull and is yet to claim a title, with 2010 coming as his best shot at the title. He finished third in drivers’ championship when Vettel clinched the championship in Abu Dhabi Grand
Prix.
Webber had an argument in 2010 that Vettel is given more importance than him and that the team is biased towards the younger driver.
Horner added, “I think if he [Webber] didn't believe that, he'd stop. He's a strong enough character that if he didn't believe it, he would have stopped at the end of the year.”
No word has come from Webber yet as weather he would like to continue in 2012 season or not.
The 2011 Formula 1 season starts in less than a month and it will be interesting to see whether Mark is up to the mark or not.
