Christian Horner: Red Bull did not perform well at 2012 Australian Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing team principal, Christian Horner has said that McLaren won the 2012 Australian Grand Prix held at Albert Park in Melbourne, Australia, because the defending champions underperformed.
McLaren has dominated in the first GP as Lewis Hamilton was successful in attaining the pole for his team after the qualifying on Saturday, while Jenson Button claimed the victory at the first race on Sunday.
Conversely, the pair of Red Bull, Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber could only able to qualify at fifth and sixth and remained at second and fourth positions at the end of the race.
Horner was quite arrogant after he was faced with the defeat in the season opener and expressed that McLaren did not win the race but Red Bull lost.
Red Bull had been winning the Formula 1 world championship from the last couple of years. Moreover, during the last year they completely dominated and won 12 out of 19 races in which 11 were claimed by the double world champion, Vettel.
Red Bull struggled during the last day of the final test held at Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona, where they could only be able to complete 23 laps and stood last on the timesheets.
However, they had still been deemed as the front-runner for the 2012 title.
Furthermore, Vettel had been considered the out-and-out favourite for the championship even after he faced problems on the final day of the last pre-season test due to the upgrades in the car RB8.
In addition, Horner said that in point of fact, Red Bull could have been faster than the McLaren but they could not perform well. Nonetheless, he said that they would prove what they said at the next races in the season ahead.
“It was a good recovery and we had good pace in the race,” said the Red Bull team boss. “We were right on same pace as the McLarens and could have been faster. Overall it was a good recovery. I think we underperformed rather than McLaren being overly strong
and that is the story - we can prove it next time we race.”
