Christian Horner: Red Bull to change pit activity to deceive Ferrari – Formula 1 news
Red Bull team Principal Christian Horner has said that his pit crew will change its tactics altogether so that no one is copying their pit-stop strategy in the race.
Horner stated that if Ferrari were not listening to their team radio in the Spanish Grand Prix, maybe they noticed some activity in our pits and called Fernando Alonso in every time Webber was there.
Red Bull’s Helmut Marko raised an issue immediately after the race that Ferrari were able to respond to Red Bull’s calls to Webber which meant that the Italy-based team was spying on them.
Now Horner has come up with an innovative idea to deceive Ferrari in the pits. He explained, “We have changed our procedures this weekend. I don't know if mechanics were putting their hands in their pockets at the wrong time, or it was someone picking a
tyre up. But anyway, we have changed our procedures this weekend to be less transparent.”
Although Horner did not tell the exact changes to his pits, which is understandable as he does not want anyone to know their tactics, something special can be expected from the Red Bull crew this time.
Horner added that Ferrari were able to copy their strategy but did not accuse the team of spying on them.
He commented, “They saw something we were doing that was giving away when we were going to stop, and would call Fernando in – because it couldn't be coincidence that he just happened to stop every time that we called Mark in.”
Red Bull finally made a fake call to Webber on which Ferrari responded and in the process, Alonso lost track position to the Australian. However, by that time, Webber was far behind to challenge for the podium.
Webber ended the race in fourth place mainly because he was stuck behind Alonso for almost the entire race distance.
Nevertheless, in the upcoming Monaco Grand Prix, it will be interesting to see what changes Red Bull team makes to their pit strategy to deceive Ferrari.
