Christian Horner admits 2012 F1 season ‘toughest challenge’ so far – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing’s team principal, Christian Horner, has admitted that the 2012 F1 season has been the most difficult challenge so far which makes their victory even more gratifying.
“They've always worked hard but this year I think by far has been our toughest challenge,” Horner said. “It's been the hardest championship, constructors and drivers, because we've had to really fight our way back into them; that is what made it the most
gratifying in many respects.”
Horner also appreciated all the team members who work really hard at the Milton Keynes factory.
“The personal sacrifices, the time that's given up away from home, away from family and friends, particularly in Milton Keynes has been just remarkable,” he added.
In the beginning of the 2012 F1 season, Red Bull was struggling with the RB8 and Sebastian Vettel, who won the title both in 2010 and 2011, was seen quite off his pace while Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso led the championship right until the summer break. Vettel
turned the odds in his favour as he won four consecutive races from Singapore till India.
Vettel kept his lead over Alonso right until the final race in Brazil despite having to face certain obstructions that tested his driving abilities. The Brazilian GP was no less difficult for the German driver but he won the championship by three points
although he finished sixth while Alonso finished second that day.
Vettel has now become the youngest triple champion in the history of F1 with Red Bull Racing being the fourth team to secure three constructors’ championships in a row. The Red Bull driver had been under speculation for his overtaking abilities ever since
his comfortable win during the 2011 F1 season however after this recent win, he has proved the critics wrong. Vettel has stated that even 2011 was not easy since keeping the lead in races is as much difficult as overtaking competitive drivers.
While Vettel and Red Bull’s chief technical officer, Adrian Newey, have admitted to continue with the team, Ferrari have come clear about their decision to choose Vettel if Alonso quits the team in the future.
