Christian Horner and Martin Whitmarsh against in-season testing – Formula 1 news
According to some recent reports, it has been revealed that Red Bull Racing team’s principal Christian Horner and McLaren’s principal Martin Whitmarsh have both stated that they are not going to back the International Automobile Federation (FIA) president
Jean Todt’s proposal regarding the reintroduction of in-season testing.
Todt recently told the media in Turkey that he is going to look for the teams to agree regarding the reintroduction of in-season testing in order to help the teams in their car development during the Formula 1 season.
In-season testing was banned in 2009 in a bid to cut costs. Horner has stated that his team is not going to support this reintroduction as they are happy with the way rules are regarding testing at the moment.
“We are not interested in the idea of allowing private testing during the season. We consider the current situation to be well balanced. To change it would raise costs, inevitably,” Horner told the media.
Whitmarsh echoed Horner’s words as he believes that even though this rule is going to be quite beneficial for some of the teams of the sport, it is not going to be in the best interests of the whole Formula 1 grid.
“It is true that some teams favour more testing during the season. But we must also safeguard the interest of the smaller teams, who do not have great financial means,” said McLaren’s principal.
Firstly, the FIA wants to make Formula 1 greener and cut costs since the sport is going through a tough time financially. In-season testing is not possible for all of the teams and even if it is, most of the teams do not have the money to improve their respective
cars and apply expensive upgrades after each race.
Other than that, since the Formula 1 season is not jam packed and the teams barely get time, reintroducing this rule is going to make it very hectic for the teams as well as a result of which, the drivers and the teams are not going to be as comfortable
as they are right now throughout the season.
