Christian Horner appreciates Michael Schumacher’s move during Brazilian GP – Formula 1 news
Red Bull’s team principal, Christian Horner, has appreciated Michael Schumacher’s decision to let Sebastian Vettel overtake him during the Brazilian Grand Prix last Sunday.
“Michael very graciously gave him P6 and that was enough to convert his third consecutive World Championship,” said Horner. “Michael is renowned for being a tough racer. I think it was his gesture to Sebastian, almost like passing the baton on. I'm sure
it was not particularly well received at his former employer [Ferrari] but I thought it was very magnanimous of Michael to move out of the way for his fellow countryman.”
Vettel had started the race with a 13-point lead over his Ferrari rival Fernando Alonso. In order to defeat Vettel, Alonso needed to win the race or at least finish on the podium given that the Red Bull driver finished eighth or below.
Vettel went through many difficulties throughout his race which included a first lap collision that put him at the back of the grid. However, the driver made it back up despite tricky conditions of the track due to the rain and also the lack of radio communication
with his team.
Schumacher let Vettel pass him for the sixth position and finished seventh himself. Vettel ended the race with the sixth place while Alonso made it to the podium with second position, although that did not help him win as Vettel became youngest triple champion
with a three point lead.
Schumacher has appreciated the young driver stating that he is one of the smartest drivers and understands what is necessary to succeed. He said that just like him Vettel learns from his rivals and improves himself.
Both German drivers have been compared a lot over the years. With this latest achievement, Vettel is four titles behind him in order to break the seven title record and just needs two more consecutive championships to break his five consecutive title record.
Meanwhile, Vettel has repeatedly said the same thing that Schumacher is incomparable and he is still very far behind in achieving the same respect.
Both drivers enjoy a good relationship as they have been representing team Germany in the Race of the Champions for the last five years.
