Christian Horner declares Fernando Alonso key factor in 2012 F1 championship – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing team principal, Christian Horner has declared Fernando Alonso of Ferrari the key factor in 2012 Formula 1 championship.
Even though, the Scarlet team expressed that they would face difficulties in the first few races as they struggled with F2012 during the pre-season testing programme.
However, it seems that they have been able to solve the issues as Alonso is presently leading the drivers’ rankings with 76 points and he is 3 points ahead of Red Bull pair of drivers, Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber. Therefore, Horner believes that the
Spaniard is going to be their main rival in the season ahead.
“It's immensely tight,” he said after the Monaco Grand Prix. “You've got Fernando three points ahead of our two drivers, who are now tied. It's so open at the moment, you've got six or seven drivers that are all in serious contention.”
He added, “I think our guys haven't been taking points off each other, they were first and fourth today and they're free to race. Fernando's driven very well and he's going to be a key factor all the way through this championship, for sure.”
Furthermore, he said that it is extremely difficult to make any kind of projections about the upcoming races as there have been six different winners in the first six races.
The defending champions are currently leading the constructors’ championship with 146 points and they are 38 points ahead of McLaren.
In addition, both their drivers remained ahead of McLaren’s pair of drivers, Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton in 2012 Monaco Grand Prix held at Circuit de Monaco on May 27. Nonetheless, Horner said that the Woking based will definitely strike back in the
approaching races.
Over and above, he said that they are looking forward to perform well in 2012 Canadian GP which is to be held at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve on June 10.
He also said that they are trying their best to make the necessary developments and the essential preparations in order to improve the pace of their car for the forthcoming races so as to defend their championship title.
