Christian Horner feels Mark Webber will stay with Red Bull beyond 2012 – Formula 1 news
Christian Horner rubbished rumours surrounding his driver Mark Webber’s linking him with a Ferrari move.
Horner said that Webber is very happy with Red Bull and that he is not concerned over the rumours of the Aussie moving to any other team.
Webber’s future at Red Bull was being speculated to be coming to an end with the Aussie’s contract maturing at the end of 2012. While Ferrari is likely to replace Felipe Massa at the end of the 2012 season as the Brazilian has been struggling to perform
for the most part of the last two years.
Massa had been a warning from his team president Luca di Montezemolo who told him that he needed to perform in the 2012 season or face losing his race seat with the team. So far, after four races completed for the season Massa has only been able to secure
2 points for his team.
While Ferrari is also struggling with the 2012 car causing a lot of technical issues, Massa will in most probability find himself to be the scapegoat. Massa’s contract also ends at the end of the 2012 season.
Horner though feels that Webber is not going to be interested in any other team and he will be looking to talk to the Aussie over an extension to his contract.
“Every spring seems to be a reciprocal thing that Mark is going to Ferrari,” Horner told Autosport. “He is not wearing red overalls. I think it is inevitable, almost every driver in the pitlane has been linked alongside Fernando [Alonso] next year, but we
are focused on ourselves.”
He added that Webber enjoys being with Red Bull and is very happy. He mentioned that when it will be the right time, he will sit with the Aussie to map out how Red Bull and Webber can prolong their relationship and move ahead. He said it will be something
that the management will talk over with Webber. He added that speculation is part of the Formula 1 business but Webber is quite content with the team.
It will be interesting to see what happens at the end of the 2012 year as many drivers end their contracts with their respective teams.
