Christian Horner ready to hold contract talks with Mark Webber – Formula 1 news
Christian Horner has revealed that he will hold talks with Mark Webber about his contract with Red Bull for the 2014 Formula 1 season.
There have been numerous rumours surrounding the Australian driver’s future, but nothing has been confirmed yet. After the first few races of the season, there were reports that he might quit racing by the end of this year.
However, Webber recently said in an interview that he might switch to another competitive team like Ferrari, which showed that he was still focused to be a part of the sport and had no plans of retiring.
With Horner’s statement, it seems almost certain that the veteran racer is not going anywhere and will once again be seen in action next year.
According to Red Bull’s team principal, “Our driver pairing is one of the most successful in formula one history. We stand behind this team and will be having a conversation with Mark later in the summer.”
In praise of his drivers, he added, “I think they're doing a good job so far. Both have shown they have the speed, now it's about adding the final touches to build on their experience and run regularly in the points.”
After Sebastian Vettel’s controversial victory in Malaysia, where he ignored team orders and overtook his team-mate rather than saving tyres, it was expected that the Red Bull driver line up would most definitely be different in 2014.
Despite that, things have moved on well for the reigning champions and they seem to be comfortably placed at the top of the points table right now. Both their drivers have been scoring solid points over the past few events which has helped them stay at an
advantage over main rivals Ferrari.
However, it has been Vettel, who has been winning races more often and Webber has been unable to match him since the second round of the season. It will be interesting to see what happens between the two, when they come close to each other during any race.
If the contract talks between Horner and Webber fail, Red Bull will look at some of the other options such as former world champion Kimi Raikkonen, who has been in terrific form this season.
