Christian Horner says Jenson Button ‘potential title contender’ to Sebastian Vettel – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing team manager, Christian Horner and Formula 1 chief executive, Bernie Ecclestone have expressed that Jenson Button of McLaren may prove out to be the major rival to the defending champions in the forthcoming 2012 F1 season starting on March
18, 2012 at Albert Park in Melbourne, Australia.
During the last season, Button finished second in the drivers’ championship following the dominating Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel. Moreover, he astonished the spectators with his performance while beating his highly rated teammate, Lewis Hamilton.
“Jenson seemed to get the team around him and strung a set of results together that was very impressive,” Red Bull team boss Horner told Sky Sports.
And when pressed on by BBC radio to name Vettel’s biggest rival, he admitted, “Probably Jenson.”
Moreover, Ecclestone hoped that Hamilton would be back to his best in the forthcoming season. However, Ecclestone admitted that Button could defeat Hamilton once again in the upcoming season.
Furthermore, he said that he felt surprised with the performance of Button during the last year as he was good at managing his tyres and car.
“Early days. I mean I was very surprised; Jenson did a good job last year. He certainly looks after the car better and the tyres and everything else. As it happens Lewis is my type of driver; he's a racer. Where I think somebody like Jenson is more like
Michael perhaps,” said Ecclestone.
Hamilton remained out of form in many races during the last season which could be much attributed to the problems he faced in his personal life which had an impact on his performance on track. Moreover, the last season in Hamilton’s F1 career was the first
time that he was defeated by his teammate.
Furthermore, Ecclestone expected that Hamilton would have been successful in solving his personal life issues while he declared that he could perceive Hamilton having a thought about leaving McLaren if more hardships were faced.
When Ecclestone was asked about where Hamilton would go, he stated that there were two teams, Ferrari and Red Bull, and it was up to the Brit to decide where he wants to have his future.
