Christian Horner says Mark Webber closing the gap to Sebastian Vettel – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner has said that Mark Webber is closing the gap between him and his teammate Sebastian Vettel who is currently dominating the 2011 Formula 1 season by 186 points in the drivers’ standings.
Red Bull in general have been dominating the season so far as they currently have a perfect pole position scoring record with Sebastian Vettel scoring 7 poles while Webber secured the pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix.
Vettel has won 6 races while the Australian driver has been unable to win a single race but has secured a couple of podiums this season.
Nevertheless at this past weekend’s European Grand Prix, Mark secured the 3rd place after qualifying in 2nd place behind his teammate after which Christian Horner has admitted that the team might keep him for another year.
“It was the best race of the season from Mark in terms of the performance from the tyres. He has never been this close to Seb (in 2011) and he controlled it well. I hope he will stay on his (Vettel's) heels because it's no secret that he has had problems
with the tyres this year,” said Horner.
Webber has been struggling to cope up with his teammate and recently admitted as a result that the European Grand Prix was a big leap forward for him.
“I think it was the closest I have been (to Vettel) for a while. I think it's getting better,” said Webber.
Other than that, Horner stated that the result of the European Grand Prix should give Webber the confidence to score even better results in the future and that he should now compete alongside the reigning world champion to give the team the best possible
results in the future.
“Now he understands them better. Just look at the difference in this race, for 90 percent he was 4-5 seconds from Seb. I hope this result gives him great confidence for the future,” stated the Red Bull team principal.
The upcoming British Grand Prix will take place in Silverstone and due to the Blown Diffuser ban, it is believed that Red Bull might go through a major performance deterioration.
