Christian Horner says Red Bull will not regret Leaving FOTA – Formula 1 news
Christian Horner has said that Red Bull does not regret its decision to leave Formula One Teams’ Association (FOTA).
Red Bull along with Toro Rosso, Ferrari, and Sauber left FOTA over issues ranging from resource restriction to limited testing days. Red Bull sent a lengthy statement to FOTA explaining the main reasons behind Red Bull’s decision to leave the association.
Mercedes boss and president of FOTA Ross Brawn came out in defence of the association and said that it was a shame that the teams decided to quit FOTA. He believes that the teams should stick together in order to get the best for the teams. He said that
it is a decision that will be regretting in hindsight.
Brawn warned that the split may cause more damage especially when the Concorde Agreement is about to be revised. He explained that it was essential for the teams to be united before FIA so that they are in a better position to get the most out it.
Horner though has said that he does not see it the way Brawn sees it. He explained that the association has changed its core functioning from what it was initially formed on the basis of. He added that FOTA is now looking into issues that are out of their
remit.
ESPNF1 asked Horner if he understood where the Mercedes team principal was coming from, and he replied, “Not really.”
“I think the problem with FOTA is that its purpose had become clouded and it was dealing with issues that were beyond its remit. Therefore, we chose to step out of FOTA for the time being and wished them well for the future. But we are very comfortable with
our decision and we'd rather be master of our own destiny than a part of FOTA at this time,” he further added.
It will be interesting to see how the Concorde agreement goes down without some of its major members now out of the association, although it is to be noted that Horner and other teams who left have maintained that they wish the association all the best for
the future.
