Christian Horner says title is still very much a four-way battle – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing team principal, Christian Horner has said that this year’s championship is still a four-way battle which will be fought amongst them, Mercedes, Ferrari and Lotus.
Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull successfully increased his lead in the drivers’ championship to 157 points after claiming an incredible victory in his home race at Nurburgring. Meanwhile, the Milton Keynes based squad are leading the constructors’ championship with 250 points and have a strong lead over all the other contenders.
However, Horner thinks that there are still many races left in this season and they cannot get carried away with their current lead in the drivers’ and constructors’ standings.
The Briton said that they have earned a very lead in the title fight until now, but nothing can be predicted about the season ahead. Therefore, he insisted that they must keep on working hard in order to compete well with their main rivals in the forthcoming races.
“It's still very much a four-way battle and you can't discount anybody,” he said. “We're effectively at the halfway point of the year and there's still an awful long way to go. Anything can change, but to have won four grands prix in the first half of the year is satisfying but it doesn't guarantee anything. From weekend to weekend we see different teams with different levels of competitiveness.”
In addition, he said that they were quite disappointed when Vettel was retired in the British GP because of gearbox failure as they lost some crucial points in the championship battle. Nonetheless, he asserted that they are extremely happy with the German driver’s result in the German GP.
“For us in some ways it made up for the disappointment of Silverstone, having got so close to winning the British Grand Prix, to address that a week later at Sebastian's home race was a great result.” he added.
Besides, after the preceding race, he admired the new Pirelli compound tyres which are a lot stronger than the previous ones and said that the tyre management will surely play an important part in deciding this year’s champion.
