Christian Horner says tyre management is key for success in 2012 Spanish GP – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing team principal, Christian Horner has said that tyre management is the key for success in 2012 Spanish Grand Prix which is to be held at Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona on May 13.
Horner avoided to make any kind of predictions about the race day and said that they need to wait until the qualifying on Saturday in order to project what may happen on Sunday.
“The tyres are the key performance factor and extracting the most out of the tyres is crucial at the moment,” he said. “So I don't think it's taken for granted that this will be a circuit that automatically suits our car. I think we'll have some idea on
Friday and a much better idea after Saturday.”
Besides, he said that the Barcelona circuit has always been a very good venue to judge the setup of the cars and added, “That's why we come here during the winter. I think that it will be very interesting to see, in the conditions and so on, who's made a
step forward and who's managing the tyres at the end of the day.”
Despite facing difficulties during the start of the season, the defending champions have still been deemed as the front-runner for this year’s championship.
Furthermore, they are presently leading the constructors’ championship with 101 points ahead of McLaren. Additionally, they have been making the best of the efforts so as to make the necessary advancements and the essential preparations for the upcoming
races so as to defend their title.
On the other hand, their talented drivers, Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber are currently at first and third position in the drivers’ standings.
It will be important to mention that the two-time world champion has expressed that the information which has been gathered during the last two pre-season tests would not provide much help in assessing the performance of the teams as the track conditions
have changed over the period of time.
Over and above, Horner believes that they will come up more competitive in the next race as they have managed to make progress during the three-day in-season test held at Mugello circuit.
