Christian Horner terms Vettel’s consecutive world titles an outstanding achievement – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner lauded his driver Sebastian Vettel at clinching his back-to-back world championship and becoming the youngest ever driver in Formula 1 history to have the honour of doing so.
Horner believes it is a phenomenal achievement for Vettel. He says the 24-year-old German has really proven with his hard work and outstanding performance throughout the 2011 Formula 1 season that he has what it takes to be counted amongst one of the greatest
drivers in the history of the sport.
The young Red Bull driver has been dominating the season from the very start. He now has 9 wins and 12 pole positions in the ongoing season and required only one point to win the 2011 title at Suzuka. By finishing third with 15 points, he ensured that he
became the youngest ever driver to win back-to-back titles.
Commenting on Sunday’s race at Suzuka, Horner said that the team did not display its best, and they were a bit slow in the pit lane. Vettel started the race from the pole position and dominated the race for most of the race duration until Jenson Button of
McLaren overtook him in the pit lane. In the end, Vettel finished in the 3rd position, with Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso finishing second ahead of him.
Horner said, “Third and fourth is still a strong haul of points for the constructors' championship and we have consolidated our lead of 130 points. However, today belongs to Sebastian.”
Red Bull technical director Adrian Newey, delighted at his team’s victory, said that the second title clearly speaks of the Milton Keynes-based team’s commitment and dedication to the sport. He acknowledged his team’s efforts and said that they have been
working really hard on their car lately.
“From being a start-up team in 2005 to winning the title last year was very special, but this year showed that it wasn't just a flash in the pan, that we can come back in successive years and win,” Newey said. “It's a great tribute to everybody in Milton
Keynes and all the effort that's gone on. It's fantastic for the team.”
The Red Bull team is still in a dominant position on the constructors’ standings and will need to do well in the remainder of the season in order to win their second team title.
The next race will be taking place in Korea this weekend, October 14-16, 2011 at the Korea International Circuit.
