Christian Kubusch pockets Men's 800m freestyle gold: Day one – German SC Nationals
Christian Kubusch of SC Magdeburg pocketed gold medal of Men's 800m freestyle onn the first day of the 2011 German Short Course Nationals on Thursday, November 24 in Wuppertal.
The 23-year-old Kubusch dominated 800m event from the start of the race. He devastated hopes of his competitors and secured gold finish on the podium in a very comfortable manner.
With his tremendous skills, he gained a prominent lead over his competitors in the initial 200 meters of the race, where he clocked a time of 1 minute and 52.28 seconds. He remained almost 3.50 seconds ahead of Manuel Schwarz of SG Frankfurt, who posted
a time of 1 minute and 55.74 seconds for the equivalent distance.
Subsequently, Kubusch strengthened his lead to almost 7 seconds in the next four rounds, where he reported a time of 3 minutes and 48.57 seconds for the first half of the race. He was trailed by Schwarz, who concluded his first half in a time of 3 minutes
and 55.99 seconds.
Kubusch continued his overpowering efforts in the second half of the race. He hit the wall with a fastest time of 7 minutes and 46.86 seconds for gold medal. His title claiming effort was nearly eleven seconds behind the national mark of 7 minutes and 35.23
seconds, held by Paul Biedermann of SV Halle in 2008.   
He was also 15.68 seconds away from improving the European mark of 7 minutes and 31.18 seconds, made by Federico Colbertaldo of Italy in 2009. Furthermore, he remained 23.44 seconds slower than the world record of 7 minutes and 23.42 seconds, set by Grant
Hackett of Australia during 2008.
The gold medallist remained approximately seven seconds ahead of his strongest rival, Schwarz, who tapped the wall in a time of 7 minutes and 53.51 seconds for silver medal.
The 23-year-old Schwarz managed to overwhelm Joel Ax's effort for second position. Ax of SC Wiesbaden 1911 earned bronze medal of the race by reporting a time of 7 minutes and 54.55 seconds.
In addition, the podium finishers were invited on the victory stand for their invincible efforts after the completion of championship.
