Christian Kubusch wins Men’s 1500m freestyle final - 2011 German World Championships Selection Trial
Christian Kubusch of SC Magdeburg has won the Men’s 1500m freestyle final on the opening day of the 2011 German World Championships Selection Trial.
The German Championships are a selection trial for their national team which will participate at the 2011 Shanghai World Championships, during July.
The 22-year-old Kubusch claimed the gold medal of the distant freestyle swim and earned his Shanghai spot, by clocking a time of 15:09.94 minutes. His time ranks 14th in the 2011 early world rankings and he was almost 35 seconds above the world record of 14:34.56 minutes, held by Australian swimmer, Grant Hackett.
The German gold medallist remained almost 26 seconds away from the European record of 14:43.21 minutes, which was made by Russian swimmer, Yury Prilukov, on August 17, 2008. His timing was 1:03.59 minutes away from the German mark of 14:50.36 minutes, owned by Jorg Hoffman of OSC Potsdam.
Kubusch was almost 5 seconds ahead from his closest competitor, Martin Grodzki, who occupied the silver medal, producing a time of 15:14.68 minutes. The 28-year-old Jan Wolfgarten followed them on the podium for earning the bronze medal, with a timing of 15:18.72 minutes.
Christian became the arena’s favourite in the first round, where he completed the first 100 metres of the race clocking a time of 58.77 seconds. The German youngster was engaged in a neck-to-neck race with his competitors in the first-half of the race.Grodzki was the fastest swimmer in the first 700m of the race, where he completed his laps with a timing of 7:03.27 minutes against Kubusch’s 7:03.51 minutes effort.
Kubusch gained a slight lead in the tenth round of the race, where he clocked 10.05.91 minutes against Jan’s 10:06.35 minutes effort. With his persistent efforts, the German champion kept on increasing his lead from his fellow competitors and clocked 15:09.94 minutes to win the title of the 1500m event.
The German was happy after securing the crown and admired the breath-taking swim of his competitor, Martin. In addition, the national champion claimed that he will try to improve his performance to enter in the finals of his event at Shanghai, this July.
