Christian Kubusch wins Men’s 800m freestyle final - 2011 German World Championships Selection Trial
Christian Kubusch of SC Magdeburg has won the Men’s 800m freestyle gold medal on the last day of the 2011 German World Championships Selection Trial.
The championship is a trial of national swimmers for the upcoming 2011 World Championships in Shanghai, this July.
The 23-year-old Kubusch exhibited his spectacular efforts in the distant freestyle swim, by earning the gold medal of the event in a superb time of 7 minutes and 55.43 seconds. His time was 23.31 seconds slower than the world mark of 7:32.12 minutes, owned
by China’s Lin Zhang at the 2009 Rome World Championships. The German champion stayed almost twelve seconds away from the European mark of 7 minutes and 43.84 seconds, held by Federico Colbertaldo at the same world titles. The Magdeburg swimmer also failed
to improve his personal national mark of 7 minutes and 49.12 seconds, which he set at the 2010 Budapest European Championships.
The national champion was followed by Martin Grodzki of SSC Berlin-Reinickendorf, who occupied the podium for the silver medal, after posting an effort of 7 minutes and 59.54 seconds. Moments later, Jan Wolfgarten of SV Wurzburg 05 secured the third fastest
spot by completing his swim in a time of 7 minutes and 59.91 seconds.
They were followed by Rob Muffels and Soren Meißner on the finishing wall, after completing their swims in the fourth and fifth fastest spots with timings of 8:11.19 and 8:14.24 minutes, respectively.
Kubusch was enormously happy with his effort and stated that he will work hard to improve his timings for the 2012 London Olympic Trials.
In addition, the 18-year-old Marcel Jerzyk of Waspo 08 Gottinge dominated the same event in his age group category, where he emerged as the fastest swimmer to conquer the title in a time of 8 minutes and 14.48 seconds. Lukas Besser of SG Ruhr and Florian
Dorries of Hamburger SC followed him on the victory stand by securing the second and third positions, with timings of 8:40.25 and 8:46.17 minutes, respectively.
In the 17-year-old age group, Felix Gebhardt cruised his way to the finishing wall, claiming the title of his event in an astounding time of 8 minutes and 18.51 seconds. He was followed by Hendrik Rijkens and Ruwen Straub, who touched the wall for silver
and bronze medal, by posting a time of 8:29.88 and 8:30.06 minutes, respectively.
Straub was almost four seconds away from his strongest competitor, Florian Straubinger, who settled fourth behind him, producing a time of 8:34.75 minutes.
