The club’s sporting director expressed his disappointment on the loss to Bayer Leverkusen this weekend and has admitted defeat in the title race.
Bayern continued to underperform after the winter break and suffered their sixth defeat of the season at the hands of Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, March 3, at BayArena. Stefan Kiessling and Karim Bellarabi scored for the hosts
as Werkself continued their stunning revival after the one month break.
Nerlinger claimed that his side were surely out of shape and never looked like scoring in the game. He insisted that the defending was poor as Leverkusen were allowed to counter attack frequently and both the goals came from counters.
The chief admitted that his side has no chances to lift the Bundesliga crown this season after the loss as there is a seven point gap now from leaders, Borussia Dortmund. Nerlinger rued missed chances throughout the course of 90
minutes and lamented the away form of this team.
“We lost our shape and gave Leverkusen space to counter attack – which they did twice. We won’t be talking about winning the league. I’m not writing off the title, but it’s not something which need concern us now. Somehow, we have
to get a grip on our weakness away from home,” he was quoted as saying in an interview.
On the other hand, manager Jupp Heynckes was left furious with the loss. He stated that the team had innumerable chances to find the net in the first-half but they failed to do so. He added that Bayern will have to improve on their
away form in the remaining 10 games of the season otherwise it will only get worse.
“We were outstanding in the first half and had huge chances, which we failed to take. That's the curse hanging over us at the moment. It's a big disappointment to all of us,” he concluded.
Bayern Munich remained on the second spot with 48 points from the 24 games played and are seven points behind Dortmund at the moment. The former German champions will next face Hoffenheim at the Allianz Arena on Saturday, March
10, in their next Bundesliga clash.
