Christian Nerlinger insists Bayern Munich is amongst the favourites to win the Champions League
Bayern Munich Sporting Director Christian Nerlinger has stated that the Munich giants are amongst the favourites to win the UEFA Champions League this season. He claimed that there are a number of teams which are capable of winning
the competition and his side is surely one of them.
Die Bayern recently qualified for Europe’s premier club competition by defeating FC Zurich in the play-off round with a 3-0 aggregate. The club has now been placed in arguably the toughest group this season with the likes of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Napoli-c40003,
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Villarreal-CF-c40899 and cash rich Manchester City.
Nerlinger admitted that Spanish duo http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604 and Real Madrid would be the favourites to progress far in the competition alongside English champions Manchester United. But he insisted that the Bavarian outfit also has the quality
and class to challenge the above mentioned teams and win.
“You have top favourites Barcelona and Real Madrid, and arguably also Manchester United, but then you have a group of clubs including Bayern,” he was quoted as saying in an interview.
The Director insisted that Bayern definitely has a chance this season if the club plays consistently throughout the season and remain strong defensively, which was a major concern last term. He further added that the team suffered
last season because of persistent injuries to key players like http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arjen-Robben-c6521 and Franck Ribery.
“I'm sure we have a chance, provided we stick to our tactics, keep it tight in defence, play to our attacking strengths, and avoid too many injuries,” he continued.
Nerlinger added that Bayern will also need a bit of luck in the competition. He remained confident of a successful campaign and admitted that he has full confidence in the current squad.
“However, the Champions League is also about form on the day, and a bit of luck when you need it,” he concluded.
Bayern Munich will travel to El Madrigal to play their first Champions League group stage match against Villarreal CF on Wednesday next week. Jupp Heynckes side are currently on a five match winning streak.
