Christian Poulsen 'set for Liverpool move'
Juventus defensive midfielder Christian Poulsen is reportedly set for a switch to Liverpool after the English Premier League outfit were said to have agreed a fee with the Serie A giants. According to Italian website Tuttomercatoweb, the Reds have had a bid of around £4.75m accepted by Juve, with the player’s move subject to a medical and agreeing personal terms.
The Denmark international has reportedly been high on Roy Hodgson’s transfer wish-list this summer. With Poulsen deemed to be not needed by Juve head coach Luigi Del Neri, it is expected that the new Liverpool manager will get his man.
The player’s agent Joern Bonnesen confirmed last week that he had been in talks with the EPL side’s board of directors over a move, but that the transfer had been dependant on the club’s agreeing over a fee for the transfer.
The 30-year-old Poulsen started out his career with Holbæk B&I in his homeland and after three seasons there, made his way to Copenhagen in the Danish Superliga top flight. He made an immediate impact as he quickly settled into an attacking midfield role in the first team and helped the club win the league in the 2000-01 season. The 2001-02 season saw Copenhagen finish second in the Superliga, but Poulsen was named the club’s player of the year. His performances helped him win a move to German Bundesliga club Schalke.
With Schalke, Poulsen often found himself playing out of position at right-back but eventually forced his way into the midfield spots. He later earned a move to Juventus thanks to his grit, determination and skill in the middle of the pitch.
Poulsen has also been a staple of the Denmark national team since making his international debut in 2001. He has won 77 caps with his country.
