Christian Sprenger secures Men’s 50m breast-stroke gold: Day three – Australian University Games
Australian breast-stroke veteran, Christian Sprenger continued his supremacy in the breast-stroke discipline by winning the title of Men’s 50m breast-stroke on third day of the 2011 Australian University Games. The meet was organised at Gold Coast Aquatic
Centre, in Queensland, on September 29.
QLD University of Technology’s Sprenger demonstrated his mettle in the events of 100m breast-stroke, 200m breast-stroke and the 4*100m freestyle relay, where he captured gold medals in all disciplines. His splendid performance in these University Games aroused
the expectations of his fans, which the Australian expert met by lowering his own championship record of the event.
Sprenger posted a dazzling 28.76 seconds and remained prominently under his previous mark of 28.94 seconds, set by him at the 2009 Universiade. With his astonishing effort, the champion remained irresistibly ahead of his aggressive competitors, who had their
sight affixed to take Sprenger down in the one-lap race.
The winner stands at Number 14 on the Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) world ranking and is the best among Australian breast-stroke swimmers. He looked relax on the starting blocks and was challenged by his following swimmer, University of NSW’s
Shaun Abbott, who tried to surpass him in the first 15 metres of the race, but the winner took charge of the swim and cruised his way to the finishing wall, leaving Abbott 0.72 seconds behind.
His time was 1.09 seconds slower than his personal best, set at the 2011 Shanghai World Championships, where he hit the wall in 27.67 seconds, whereas, Abbott clocked a time of 29.48 seconds to secure the podium for silver medal. The third spot of the race
was claimed by Christopher Warren of Macquarie University, who stayed only 0.47 seconds slower than silver medallist and settled on the victory stand for third position, with an effort of 29.95 seconds.
Sprenger had no trouble in defending his title and the breast-stroke specialist expressed contentment over his victory. Furthermore, he expressed his desire to move up in the world rankings, saying that he is preparing hard to impress his fans at the 2012
London Olympics.
