Christian Vande Velde wins the stage 2 of the Tour of Utah 2012
Christian Vande Velde of Team Garmin-Sharp secured his second victory of the 2012 season after his tremendous performance during the stage 2 of the Tour of Utah 2012.
The cyclist completed the 21.7 kilometre team’s time trial stage 2 of the race in a total time of 22 minutes and 35 seconds and occupied the top podium position.
"I don't usually like to race too much in a sprint like that, but you have to get up there and fight for it every once in a while," Vande Velde briefed after the stage 1 result.
"Luckily the wind died down a little bit for us," he said.
"When we were practicing the wind was blowing hard, so we used a smaller front wheel where you wouldn't get caught up in the crosswind like you would with a bigger wheel”.
“That helped us a little. We weren't flying around as much, and we could sit on the wheel a little better".
David Zabriskie of Team Garmin-Sharp finished second with his team-mate Alex Howes, Thomas Danielson and Tyler Farrar achieving the next four spots in the respective order.
Connor O’Leary of Team Bontrager Livestrong wins the best Utah rider’s award with Reid Mumford of Team Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies and Jeffry Louder of Team UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling at the second and the third positions respectively.
Wilco Kelderman, Michael Matthews, Marc Goos, George Bennett and Lawrence Warbasse were the top five young riders on the day.
Christian Vande Velde of is now leading the stage 2 overall classifications with his team-mates and compatriots Thomas Danielson, David Zabriskie and Peter Stetina holding at the second, the third and the fourth positions respectively.
Ben Jacques-Maynes occupied the top spot at the King of Mountain classifications with16 points in his bag.
Eduard Alexander Beltran Suarez, Caleb Fairly, Lucas Euser and Ian Boswell secured the second, the third, the fourth and the fifth positions in the respective order.
Team Garmin-Sharp is holding the top overall position after the stage 2 team’s classifications with a total time of 17:24:48.
Team RadioShack-Nissan, Team UnitedHealthcare, Team Rabobank and Team BMC grabbed the second, third, fourth and the fifth positions in the respective order.
