I have this great neighbor. We have similar childhoods. Middle class with many trials.

He was in a sad confused mood. His grandmother died whom he had a not so good relationship with. I wanted to comfort him even though it was more relief she passed than sadness.

But as I was talking to him, we started comparing our upbringing. Now I can't shake this sadness. I feel depressed, confused and scared.

I can only pinpoint our talk as the culprit.

Do you think depression and other emotions are easily shared as a disease can be shared?

  1. It is possible. We, as humans, feel emotions. Thus if someone is sad, we feel their emotional pain. We feel sorry for them. Thus we become sad.

In the end, just think about happy thoughts. Think about what could of happened badly, but didn't.

  2. Yes, sometimes when we see someone in despair or in sadness, we feel the same way as well. It depends, however; If someone just lost their mom or dad and and his friend knows what it feels like, then that friend feels said for his friend who just lost family.

But realistically thinking, no, depression is not contagious it's a mental defect in the brain with a certain individual's feelings. When that persons feelings swing, their hormones begin to rise to an alarming rate which affects the brain's ability to think and make logic: that's called a depression, when the individual is so sad that he or she can't make decisions for a while and they start to feel very sad.

So yes, I suppose it is possible that sadness is "contagious", but I guess it all depends on what kind of mood you're in at the moment.
