Question:

Christians, why do you believe most of us atheists rely only upon science as an excuse not to believe?

I just wonder why we are always reprimanded about our interest in science and the fact that all theories are yet to be proved 100%.

In general I don't think this is a reason at all to believe in a God. Although these are merely theories, I believe the Bible and Christianity is not true, but I don't need to scientifically prove my point to you.

There are also historic and social, and mental reasons why people are either religious or not religious. Why do Christians place atheists into the "Group of people who believe we are monkey's" box.

The whole evolution theory is just a theory in my opinion, but why the h**l should I become a Christian when I can not prove it?

  1. Its a form of cognitive dissonance. While most people do have to use facts, evidence and science to live a normal everyday life, in order to defend their faith from themselves questioning it, they have attack the source of what would cause their lack of faith, which in this case, is the science of evolution, because it directly falsifies the first story in their bible.

Now, their problem really gets big, because evolution is a FACT. Its simply not possible to argue against evolution from any informed position.

The Theory of Evolution is the *explanation* for the facts of evolution. The Theory changes, from time to time, as new facts are ADDED to the mountain of existing facts about evolution.

The Theory of Evolution is at least as solid as the Theory Of Gravity; Yet, one does not see people dissing that Theory, or trying to throw themselves off of tall buildings in their religious opposition to gravity.

  2. i've decided not to answer any other stereotyping question

  3. Very few atheists admit that evolution is an unproven theory and fewer still accept that science can't prove things 100%.  A good example of this is the new theory that space and matter have always existed, this is just nonsense to avoid admitting that nobody knows what happened right before the Big Bang or how the space got here that all matter was flung into.

You're under no more obligation to prove your beliefs to a Christian than a Christian is to prove their beliefs to you.  The trouble is that most atheists demand proof of God and insist they have proof of evolution being a fact, ignoring two basic truths.  One is that evolution is not a proven fact as you correctly acknowledge and the other is that Christians don't need to provide proof of our beliefs.

You are in truth a rare specimen of atheist here on YA, most will shake their fist and claim that all of their beliefs are 100% proven scientific facts.  Very few accept the fallibility of scientific theories.

  4. As long as its a lie an Atheist will believe it. Do you have any truth in your life? Yes, you do need evolution and abiogenesis to be an Atheist and both of which are disproven.

  5. This is symptomatic of a general problem in humanity - namely, the need to box people up into convenient packages. We stereotype people into groups according to some shared feature, because that makes it easier for us to justify refusing to identify with them. After all, if it turned out that Christians really didn't just care about their own eternal satisfaction, and Atheists really didn't want to tear down all morality, then we couldn't really justify repression against them for social and political gain, could we?

  6. because that most atheists believe in evolution and that is the stereotypical box they get placed in. just like atheists place Christians in the " bible thumper "   category not all Christians are that way either. some are just a layed back person that believes in what they believe in jsut like some atheists they just believe that way.but if you are confused you can open a bible to John 3:16

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

    John 3:15-17

    or

    # 2 Kings 17:8

And walked in the statutes of the heathen, whom the LORD cast out from before the children of Israel, and of the kings of Israel, which they had made.

    2 Kings 17:7-9 (in Context) 2 Kings 17

    # 2 Kings 17:11

And there they burnt incense in all the high places, as did the heathen whom the LORD carried away before them; and wrought wicked things to provoke the LORD to anger:

    2 Kings 17:10-12 (in Context) 2 Kings 17

    # 2 Kings 17:15

And they rejected his statutes, and his covenant that he made with their fathers, and his testimonies which he testified against them; and they followed vanity, and became vain, and went after the heathen that were round about them, concerning whom the LORD had charged them, that they should not do like them.

    2 Kings 17:14-16

  7. I don't believe this because I know that most Atheist don't understand science either.

  8. Before I answer, did you notice that you object to being placed in box with others that share your basic belief in atheism, but then you do the exact same thing by addressing this to "Christians" in general?

I haven't seen too many examples of Christians doing what you claim on Y!A, but maybe I've just missed them.  I personally don't believe that all (or even most) atheists rely only on science to support their position.  My assumption is that most atheists have some other objection to Christianity or some other religion (historical, social, personal experience in dealing with religious people, etc) and then may use science to augment or back up their belief.

That being said, I do have to agree with you on several points.  First, the fact that a scientific theory has yet to be proven to 100% certainty is not, in and of itself, a reason to believe in God.  However, this cuts both ways - simply because we cannot prove a historical claim in the Bible to 100% certainty is not, in and of itself, a reason to disbelieve God.  Rather, for both scientific and historical claims, we should evaluate the available evidence and ask, "What is the most reasonable conclusion based on this evidence?"

Second, I appreciate that you recognize that scientific evidence is not the only basis upon which something can be demonstrated.  Certainly, we don't go through life making decisions based solely on scientific evidence or the scientific method. Rather, we look at historical evidence, anecdotes, personal experiences, inferences, etc.  The same standards should apply in the religious arena.  There is scientific evidence for God, but there is also historical, archeological, social, and experiential evidence that supports Christianity's claims as well.  We may disagree about the weight or relative merit of such other evidence, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist and that it can be ignored.  There have been many times when I have seen some atheists completely reject such evidence outright and limit the discussion to only scientific evidence, which (as you point out in the reverse scenario) is an unacceptable limitation.

  9. wow, an atheist not convinced about evilution...a rare breed...one who actually has something between the ears.

Awww,  I had such high hopes for you.

  10. You don't understand the use of the word theories. Scientific theories are 'not just theories' in any sense of the word. They HAVE been proven 100% as possible as it is to 100% prove something in this universe.

  11. God told us in the bible that we would know the evil ones because he would not believe in him. God is a MAN not a woman.

  12. I agree

Science does not prove God's existence or non-existence.

Evolution is a good 'theory' and probably right but not proved.

I am an atheist because the bible is a pile of  male cow droppings.
