I agree with anastasia, except that it has nothing to do with right wing christians having filthy minds. Human beings have filthy minds, period. I am a VERY RIGHT wing conservative and have no problem with this. I love medieval art and used to like medieval re-enacting. I think it comes down to emotional maturity. Nudity has nothing to do with s*x.  A person who sees a nude body and thinks sexual thoughts is just not emotionally mature. Thus, you have many people into p**n because they can't separate the visual from the emotional.

For a christian like myself, I believe one should be modest, not prude, and if a work of art shows a human body part, get over it. Doesn't mean I go around topless. It's just a painting, or in this case, a picture on a cup. There's a difference between art and p**n. I don't think christians have ill-will in regards to this. They mean well, but, like everyone else, they are only human and, christian or not, everyone has impure thoughts about something. One another note, we can't seem to sell milk anymore without using s*x in advertisement. How retarded is that?

It was on the news a couple days ago about it in Seattle,WA,i don't think there's anything wrong with it,if you don't like it,don't go there,point blank.But where i live ,I've never even seen those around at any of our Starbucks (NC),i think there's more interesting things to be complaining about than some stupid half naked mermaid,seriously.

Isn't this a controversy from a few years ago when they did the retro cups?

The original mermaid was a siren taken from a very old engraving.  As time went on, less of her was exposed.  But Christian groups had fits when she was resurrected in 2006, calling the chain "Slutbucks" and screaming about children seeing b*****s.  

In other words, the more right wing a Christian is, the filthier the mind of that person seems to be.    Such as, when the Supreme Court ruled in favor or oral s*x in Lawrence vs. Texas, the right wingers, with Rick Santorum leading the way, started screaming this was going to lead to making unnatural acts with dogs and children and family members legal.  Um, no.  It simply struck down laws that said you could arrest two concenting adults for having any s*x other than missionary position.  

It's the same principle.  Everything is leading to the moral decay of our youth.  Even though the engraving used for the original Starbucks mermaid was from an authentic 15th Century woodcut and didn't lead to moral decay in the 1400s, it was going to lead to moral decay in 2006.

Some people really do need to just stop acting like morons.
