Question:

Christians: What should I do? ?

My husband and I have been to several different types of churches. We find that our beliefs differ. Churches have their own doctrines and it seems that many place that above bible doctrine. I believe that Jesus Christ is Head of the church and we as believers are the body. Do we have to belong to one "religion" or another? I read, and study the bible, and pray. I give, and I share the Gospel with others. But I am often asked which church do you go to? I have no answer. Anyone else with this quandary? Any Suggestions?

  1. I go to the Church of Christ, (that is not the International Church of Christ as they are a cult).  It is the only church that tries to make sure that they are following the Bible as it is, instead of what man wants.  In fact, they have scriptures to back up each decision and pray always to know if they are wrong.

  2. When you are asked "What Church do you got to?" you are in essence being asked what doctrine you follow. Which is why there are a lot of non-denominational Church's around.

So long as the church preaches Jesus died for your sin's, was raised physically alive and ascended to heaven and is the only way to salvation then the rest is really just window dressing.

To find a church treat it like you are interviewing someone for a job. Both you and your husband list out what you are looking for and go talk to the pastor. Do that during the week don't do it on a day he is preaching, his focus will not be on what you are talking about. Once you find a church then do not be afraid to be associated with it.

test everything said here against the bible. I see at least one cult poster there, the Unitiy School of Christianity:

  3. Just possible mythology does not ring true for you?

  4. Try the Unity School of Christianity.  They have a total of 20 simple premises they believe.  Only five are manditory.  The rest is up to interpretation.  They focus mainly on practice rather than debates about interpretations.

Here is what I find to be true.  Admit it or not, every person has his own spin on at least one small thing, somewhere someway.  If I look for a church that agrees with me across the board, either or I won't find it or the people will be parroting something that is dictated to them without much choice.

  5. That's what happened to me, untill I discoverd the LDS church.  The NT clearly talks about being and going to church, it is part of the doctrine.

  6. It is refreshing to hear a person that is able to separate Biblical from unbiblical and make choices in favor of believing God over men.  These man-made doctrines, I believe to be the kind of things that turn people off and push them away from the truth.

My husband and I are in a similar situation.  We quite going to church years ago after being pushed out during one of the darkest times in my life.  Yes, when we needed them the most the rejected us.  We recently tried going again, for the first time in years.  And even though it was a completely different church in a completely different town, the result was the same.  Our reasons may be different, but I do want to encourage you.

God has shown us that He is more than able to take better care of us than we can ourselves or church leaders could.  The Holy Spirit has been our guide, teaching, leading, and protecting us.  Our church family is our little family, our extended family, and the christian friends that we have been blessed with.  Christ is the Head of our little "church", and the Holy Spirit skillfully leads us.

It sounds like you are already following the lead of the Holy Spirit.  That is a good thing.  Trust God, He will put you exactly where you need to be.

There are also house or simple churches that meet in homes and other locations.  They are focused on the Bible and fellowship.  Rather than doctrine, tradition and rituals.

Here is a link to explore:

There are more if you're interested.  You can go online and look for some in your area.  This is an option if you are unable to find a church that you can make your base church.  Focus on their fruits too, whether they are of the Spirit or not.

And as for those who ask which church you go to?  You can tell them you are in-between church homes right now.  Or if they get pushy, you can get creative about changing the subject.

  7. Ages ago, when I asked an elderly friend what church he went to, he said,"I go to the big church" and explained that he attended a different church every Sunday.   You might considedr his answer, or you could saY "Christian at large."

However, I would advise you to keep looking for a congregation that fits you.  In addtion to all the things you already seem to be doing right, having the fellowship of a church community is a good thing.

  8. Maybe you could just start a Bible study with friends who you know believe similarly. Then you could further discuss the differences in your beliefs (calmly) and find a happy medium.

Also, you can look at church websites online. They may give you an idea of what they beleive without you actually going and sitting through a two-hour service.

    Good luck.

  9. Let me suggest that you attend an RCIA program.  They will teach you all about the faith and at the end you can decide if you want to join that church or not.  They will not pressure you.  Go to UIOGD.org and they will help you get connected to the local RCIA program near you.  UIOGD.org will do all the footwork for you.  btw they believe what you believe with regard to Christ being the Head of the Chruch and we as believers are the body.  Welcome and God Bless....

  10. Sometimes it takes awhile before you find a church that you feel comfortable with such as doctrine that aligns to your belief and members who do not treat church as a social club.  Definitely pray to God about it and ask that he show you a church that will allow to grow in your relationship with him.  He will provide.

  11. We should be members of a good Bible believing church.

It depends on which issues you disagree with.  Are they essentials, or non-essentials?

    Maybe this will help:

  12. Catholic

  13. Why not start your own religion, think of all the donations people would make to your church and don't forget you'll never pay any taxes.

  14. Yours is a problem caused by denominationalism. You should join the one true Church of Jesus Christ, The Holy Roman Catholic Church. She is the only one who can trace Her teachings all the way back to our Lord Jesus Christ. This is a historical fact.

  15. The Lord tells us that anyone who changes his doctrine is accursed.

So my advice to you is to go to a church that preaches and teaches the word of God and forget religion.

  16. You want to be Catholic. Or Eastern Orthodox. Seriously, learn more and you'll see what I mean. It's not a social club, it's honoring the Lord and serving Him in worship and throughout our daily lives.

  17. I was a Christian for 50 years and saw that same problem in every church I spent any time in.  So yes, it's quite a problem!  I finally found a fellowship that follows ONLY Yeshua/Jesus and ONLY the Bible.  It has brought joy to my life that I've never experienced before!  I pray you find the same fellowship - and it doesn't have to be inside a "church," it can be someone's home where they meet each week - "house church".

    Blessings to you!

  18. Matthew 6

5"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 6But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
