Christie Jonatan sends Sukamta Evert packing at Indonesia International Challenge – Badminton News
Indonesia’s upcoming badminton player, Christie Jonatan, made his presence felt in Men’s Singles round-of-16 when he outplayed his higher ranked compatriot, Sukamta Evert, at the Prim-A Indonesia International Challenge 2013, in
Surabaya, on Thursday, July 4.
In the pre-quarter-final clash, the impressive Jonatan displayed his highly elevated skills and outplayed the 6th seeded Sukamta who was the favourite to win this contest.
Jonatan showed a wonderful patience all the way and waited for the right time to pounce on his rival. He took 52 minutes to show exit to his team-mate by winding up the match in straight sets with a decent margin of 21-19 and 21-17.
On the contrary, the higher ranked Sukamta tried his level best to play aggressive badminton but he could not leave his rival behind. He failed to stay patient especially in ending points in both game and lost the match without
impressing the crowd.
Both participants were positive and aggressive in the starting points of first game and no one could manage a comfortable lead in this all-Indonesia clash. They continued employing different tactics to create pressure on each other
but remained unable to set up a reasonable lead until the one-minute break.
After the interval, the lower ranked Jonatan showed his brilliance by taking the bird early at net. He forced his opponent to get into a defensive position and managed a small lead.
In the ending points, Jonatan played in a spirited manner executing powerful smashes from the back of court and won the game with a close score of 21-19.
In the following set, Sukamta changed his playing strategy and he started to keep the bird low. But he could not dominate the pace as his opponent was patient and quick.
Jonatan did not mind prolonging the duration of rallies and he executed smashes on the right time. He was the leader on the score board until the one-minute interval.
