Christine Magnuson clinches Women’s 50m freestyle gold: Day two – 2012 Columbus Grand Prix
Two-time Olympic silver medallist, Christine Magnuson clinched gold medal of the Women’s 50m freestyle on day two of the 2012 Columbus Grand Prix at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on Saturday, March 10.
The Columbus Grand Prix is the fourth stage of the seven-stage series, the 2011-12 USA Swimming Grand Prix Series.
The 26-year-old Magnuson remained considerably ahead of her challengers throughout the single lap freestyle event. With her invincible efforts, she remained almost two strokes ahead of her strongest challenger, Kate E Dwelley of Stanford Swimming and transpired
on the victory stand for gold medal in a time of 25.06 seconds.
Her outstanding effort remained 1.33 seconds slower from the world record of 23.73 seconds, set by Britta Steffen of Germany in 2009.
She was followed by 23-year-old Dwelley, who was 0.60 seconds slower from the gold medallist and ended her swim in a time of 25.66 seconds for silver medal. Dwelley was trailed by Michelle Williams of OSU-OH, who was 0.34 seconds apart and posted a time
of 26.00 seconds for bronze medal.
Next was the equivalent event in Men’s category, where Masayuki Kishida of Tucson Ford Deal devastated hopes of his supporters by proving his mettle for the gold spot. The 26-year-old Kishida dominated the single lap freestyle event by completing his swim
in a time of 22.62 seconds.
His commendable effort remained 1.71 seconds slower from world record of 20.91 seconds, owned by Cesar Cielo of Brazil from 2009.
He was trailed by Graeme J Moore of California Aquatics, who was jsut 0.13 seconds slower from his strongest competitor and earned silver medal of the swim by posting 22.75 seconds on the board.
Krisztian Takacs of HUN surfaced as the third finest finisher of the event as he completed his race in a time of 22.78 seconds. Takacs remained just 0.07 seconds faster from Jason E Lezak of Rose Bowl Aquatics, who clocked 22.85 seconds for fourth position.
In addition, the session came to an end after the conclusion of all scheduled events in Men and Women’s corner whereas the position holders received accolades for their dazzling efforts after the session.
