Christophe Soumillon decides not to ride Dabirsim in future
Jockey Christophe Soumillon has decided not to ride Dabirsim in future. He made this move in the wake of Dabirsim's embarrassing defeat in the Group 1 Poule D'Essai Des Poulains at Longchamp last week.
Under Soumillon, the 3-yer-old made a fine start to the proceedings, but could not continue his good work afterwards. He did a decent job in the final stages of the race, but it was not enough to make him prominent on the final chart.
The 6-5 favourite ended up sixth on the table. Although it was a blanket finish, a disappointing outcome prompted the jockey to end his association with the Christophe Ferland-trained colt.
It was Soumillon's second unlucky outing with Dabirsim, as he missed the crown by a short head's distance in the Prix De Fontainebleau at Longchamp last month.
The Belgian jockey believes he lacks 'chemistry' with the 3-year-old, who was unbeaten before joining hands with Soumillon.
"I called the owner Simon Springer on Tuesday morning and I explained to him that I would prefer not to ride Dabirsim anymore. I have gone over my two rides on him and I don't think I've made any big mistakes but you have to look at the facts," Soumillon
told Paris-Turf.
"I'm not superstitious but the results speak for themselves - the chemistry isn't there between us. Regarding the horse and his connections, I think it's best for me to step aside and hope that the next jockey can help him rediscover his sparkle," he added.
After his three consecutive wins under Philippe Sogorb, Dabirsim was ridden by Frankie Dettori for two more triumphs last season. Soumillon tried to maintain the 3-year-old's unbeaten run, but failed terribly.
The Simon Springer-owned is due to run in a few major events this season. He holds entries both for next month's St James's Palace Stakes at Ascot and the Group 1 Darley July Cup at Newmarket in July this year.
On the other hand, Ferland is not ready to make any move in hurry. Refraining from giving a clear answer, the trainer stated that since the colt is not due to run in the few coming days, the connections have plenty of time to make a decision.
