Christopher Cowley wins 200m breast-stroke title at South Africa Age Group Swimming Championships
Christopher Cowley won the Men’s 200m breast-stroke final on day five of the South Africa Age Group Swimming Championships. The Championship is considered as one of the most successful South African National Championships, as nine national records have been
improved in the event.
The fifth day of the championship started with the commencement of the 200m breast-stroke in all age groups, where Christopher Cowley made his way for the gold medal in the 17 to 18-years-old age group. He won the hearts of the crowd, along with the gold
medal in an aspiring time of 2:22.24 minutes. He was almost one second ahead from the silver medallist, Kurt Benjamin, who touched the wall in a time of 2:25.66 minutes. The podium was completed with the bronze medallist, Dylan Bosch, who touched the wall
in a time of 2:26.15 minutes.
In the 16-year-olds age group, Clint Felkers, claimed the 200m breast-stroke title in a time of 2:29.24 minutes ahead of James Lawson and Harrington Johnson, who clocked a time of 2:29.70 and 2:30.53 minutes, respectively.
The crowd was stunned with the performance of 15-year-old, Edward Johannisen, in his age group. Johannisen clocked a time of 2:29.15 minutes, which was better than his senior age group swimmers. This means that he would have won the gold medal if he had
competed in the senior age group. Alaric Basson and Matthew Colaianni touched home for the silver and bronze medals in a time of 2:30.59 and 2:31.27 minutes, respectively.
In the Women’s corner, 17-year-old Kelly Gunnell produced a time of 2:36.05 minutes against her 2:34.30 minutes effort in the preliminary rounds, but she managed to win the gold medal for the event with a lead of only 0.02 seconds over Franko Jonker, who
touched the wall in a time of 2:36.07 minutes.
The 16-year-old Lindsay McLeod captured the same event in her age-bracket in a time of 2:47.74 minutes and was followed by Danielle Small, who won the silver medal in a time of 2:48.57 minutes. Genna Greevelink won the bronze medal in a time of 2:50.20 minutes.
The 15-year-old Jessica Liss won her age group title for the same event in a wonderful time of 2:34.82 minutes, which was statistically well beyond her senior age group gold medallist. She was followed by Justine Macfarlane and Tara Nicholas, who touched
the wall in a time of 2:40.57 and 2:41.03 minutes, respectively.
