Christopher Froome on Team Sky’s 2012 Tour de France approach
Christopher Froome of Team Sky believes that his side was way too cautious at this year’s Tour de France and a little attacking approach could have won them a lot more.
“There were some moments of the race, where we were overly cautious,” says Froome.
“Perhaps we would have been too greedy, if we were too ambitious. I do believe we could have got more out of the race, without compromising the yellow jersey”.
The team defined its goals before the race and stick to them which undoubtedly worked out in form of the first and the second overall spots at the race.
The British side was built around Bradley Wiggins with Christopher Froome as the second leader.
Wiggins claimed an easy victory at the race and became the first ever British cyclist in the history of the sport to bag an overall victory at the Tour de France.
Christopher Froome finished 3 minutes and 21 seconds and claimed the second overall position with Vincenzo Nibali, Jurgen Van Den Broeck and Tejay Van Garderen achieving the third, fourth and fifth positions in the respective order.
The team managed to win six stages during the race with Wiggins winning the ninth and the nineteenth stages of the race and Froome succeeding during the stage 7 of the French Grand Tour.
Mark Cavendish claimed the next three with his heroic performance during the 2nd, 18th and the 20th stages of the event.
Cavendish definitely believes that he could have done way better, had he been given enough support during the event and no just as a “back-up” rider.
“He's a great stage winner and contester for the green jersey and this year he had to put those ambitions aside for the team to focus on the yellow jersey,” Froome said of Mark.
“I definitely know that, in the team, the focus was to get the yellow jersey more than it was to get the green jersey”.
Team Sky’s focus towards Wiggins has already cost it the Manxman after Cavendish decided to end his associations with the British team and signed a three-year deal with the Belgian outfit, Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step.
Bradley Wiggins has shown interest towards riding the 2013 Giro d’Italia which gives Froome an excellent opportunity to eye an overall victory at the Tour de France 2013.
