Christopher Froome shared his Vuelta experience
After his tremendous performance at the Tour de France 2012, Christopher Froome was given one more opportunity to lead Team Sky at the last Grand Tour race of the season, the Vuelta a Espana 2012.
"For me it’s been the first time leading the team and being in a position where I need to tell the guys around me what I need to get me though the race as best as possible," he said.
The cyclist rode brilliantly throughout the race and held the first overall position for several stages before Alberto Contador claimed the top position.
The British cyclist finally had to settle for the fourth overall spot after the final general classifications.
He finished more than 10 minutes and 16 seconds behind Contador, with Alejandro Valverde Belmonte of Team Movistar and Joaquim Rodriguez Oliver of Team Katusha securing the second and the third positions respectively.
Froome finished sixth overall at the point’s classifications with 93 UCI points, fourth at the Combination classifications and had mixed emotions about his Vuelta a Espana performance.
"It’s slightly disappointing not to come away with more - obviously we had high ambitions coming here”.
“But having said that, I’m not disappointed with how we rode, and how I rode. I know I gave it everything and I know the team did a fantastic job to look after me and support me. In that sense there’s no disappointment at all".
The 27-year-old finished second overall at the Tour de France right behind his teammate Bradley Wiggins who became the first British rider to claim an overall victory at the Tour de France 2012.
Froome currently holds the seventh overall position at the UCI World Tour Elite Men Individual Rankings with as many as 376 UCI points in his bag.
Bradley Wiggins is leading the category with as many as 601 points to his credit while Joaquim Rodriguez of Team Katusha (592 points) and Tom Boonen of Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step (410 points) claimed the second and the third positions respectively.
Vincenzo Nibali (400 points), Alejandro Valverde (394 points) and Simon Gerrans (390 points) occupied the fourth, fifth and the sixth positions.
Christopher will now be seen in action at the UCI Road World Championships where he will compete against some of the top riders from across the globe.
