Christopher Kas/Alexander Peya defeat Benjamin Becker/Michael Kohlmann at Delray Beach Championship
The team of Christopher Kas of Germany and Alexander Peya of Austria defeated the German duo of Benjamin Becker and Michael Kohlmann in the quarter-final of the doubles category at the Delray Beach International Championships on Thursday night. It took 78
minutes for Kas and Peya to overcome their German opponents after a stiff contest, finishing at 6-4, 3-6.
The back-and-forth affair displayed a tremendous competition from the competitors. Kas and Peya lost the opening set of the contest but recovered very skilfully to come out as the winners. Their resilience was far better than their opponents’ and they had
a flexible game plan.
The winning pair had a first serve percentage of mere 50, while their rivals had 64 per cent accuracy with their first serve in the match. However, Kas and Peya won 46 out of a total of 68 serve points and it proved to be the differentiating factor in the
competition.
Both teams were sloppy in converting breaking opportunities in the match. The German pair squandered four serve break chances and converted just one, whereas Kas and Peya frittered away three opportunities while cashing in only one.
The opening set proved to be error-ridden for Kas and Peya. They coughed a plenty of errors together, including four double-faults. The German duo was more dominating in the first set with a 70 per cent first serve. They stung a crucial serve break to lead
the set. Becker and Kohlmann played good error-free tennis to wrap up the opening set at 6-4 and lead the match by one set to none.
Kas and Peya regrouped their strengths in the second set to make a strong come back into the game. Although their first serve percentage further sunk to a mere 32 per cent, they won 100 per cent of their first serve points.
The winning pair successfully saved two serve breaks and executed some excellent tennis shots to relieve the pressure from them. A serve break point put Kas and Peya in a nice position to clinch the second set. They closed the second set at 6-3 and brought
the match on even terms with one set a piece.
Kas and Peya lifted their serve percentage to an impressive 67 per cent in the decider. No mini-breaks were seen in the third round. The decider went up to a total of 18 points and Kas and Peya secured 10 points to wrap up a hard-fought victory for them
at 10-8.
A total of 127 points were played in the whole match up and Kas and Peya won 66 out of them compared to their opponents securing 61 to make a spot in to the semi-finals.
Kas and Peya have to wait till the conclusion of the fourth quarter-final before their next competitors are finalized. They will be taking on the winner of the match between the Brazilian pair of Franco Ferreiro and Andre Sa, and the Aussie duo of Matthew
Edben and Samuel Groth, on Friday night.
