Christopher Wright earns Men’s 100m butterfly gold: Day three – 2012 NSW State Open Championships
Christopher Wright of Australia met expectations of his fans by earning the national title of Men’s 100m butterfly on day three of the 2012 New South Wales (NSW) State Open Championships at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre on Sunday, February 12.
The 23-year-old Wright served notice of his talent by occupying gold medal of the double lap butterfly event. He experienced ruthless efforts of Jayden Hadler and Nick D’Arcy throughout the race, but managed to prevail over them on the finishing wall for gold medal.
Wright remained slightly behind Hadler in the first lap. The 18-year-old Hadler was the quickest swimmer to jump off the starting blocks and gained marginal lead over his competitors.
With his astonishing efforts, he completed his first half of the race by clocking a time of 24.59 seconds. Wright stayed just 0.29 seconds slower than Hadler and enveloped the same distance by posting a time of 24.88 seconds. The 24-year-old D’Arcy remained prominent for third finest position as he ended his initial half with an effort of 25.12 seconds.
The arena witnessed commendable struggles of Wright in the second lap. He accelerated his swim and outperformed Hadler in the second half. With his exceptional pace, Wright surpassed his competitors and made his way to the finishing end by submitting a time of 52.60 seconds for gold medal.
He was trailed by Hadler, who stayed 0.49 seconds behind the gold medallist and transpired on the finishing end for silver medal by producing a time of 53.09 seconds. The silver medallist faced strong battle from D’Arcy in the final lap, but managed to do better than him in the final 50 metres of the race.
D’Arcy was just 0.24 seconds slower from his foregoing competitor and stepped on the podium for bronze medal by reporting a time of 53.33 seconds.
Wright was delighted with his title claiming effort in the 100m discipline whereas the position holders were called upon the medal rostrum for their invincible efforts at the prize distribution ceremony of the championship.
Furthermore, the championship ended after the conclusion of all planned events in Men and Women’s category.
