Christopher Wright earns Men’s 100m butterfly gold – EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships
Christopher Wright of Southport Olympic Swimming Club earned gold medal of the Men’s 100m butterfly on second last day of the 2012 EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships at the South Australia Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Adelaide on Wednesday, March 21.
The 23-year-old Wright remained dominant over his challengers from the start of the race. With his unmatchable efforts, he was the first swimmer to jump off from the starting blocks. His quickest response to the start placed him marginally ahead of his challengers
and he managed in completing his first lap of the race by posting a time of 24.43 seconds.
His mind-blowing performance stayed 0.13 seconds ahead of Jayden Hadler of SOPAC, who completed his initial half of the event by submitting a time of 24.56 seconds.
Wright continued his nerve-wrecking form in the second lap, where he elevated his pace and strengthened his position for gold medal. With his immaculate effort, he clocked a time of 51.67 seconds and gathered the crown of the discipline.
His effort remained nearly two seconds slower from the world record of 49.82 seconds, held by Michael Phelps of USA from 2009. He was also 0.82 seconds slower from improving the Australian record of 50.85 seconds, made by Andrew Lauterstein of SOPAC in 2009.
His scintillating effort remained 0.42 seconds ahead of Hadler, who hit the wall with the timing of 52.09 seconds for silver medal of the discipline. The 18-year-old Hadler was followed by Matt Targett of Melbourne, who was 0.15 seconds behind and stepped
on the victory stand for bronze medal by ending his swim in a time of 52.24 seconds.
The fourth position of the discipline was obtained by Nick D’Arcy of St Peters Western Swim Club, who remained 0.23 seconds apart and tapped the finishing end with the timing of 52.47 seconds.
Subsequently, the Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Geoff Huegill of SOPAC finished fifth in the event as he reported an effort of 52.50 seconds.
Wright was happy with his effort in the 50m discipline as he secured a spot in the Australian team to the 2012 London Olympic Games.
