Christy Martin looking forward to knockout arch rival Mia St John in a title bout – Boxing News
Christy Martin, the former WBC female light middleweight champion, will enter the ring for one last time against arch rival Mia St John, the former WBC International female lightweight champion, in a 10-round bout which will be held on August 14, 2012.
The bout is a highly anticipated sequel to the December 2002 bout which was won by Christy Martin via unanimous decision. Martin, 44, is coming off a severe tough time of her life.
Christy was stabbed by her husband who was later on convicted for second degree murder and sentenced to a 25-year prison order. The bout was originally meant to take place in June but due to Christy’s request, the engagement was postponed.
After the depressive series of events, Christy has really showed great heart by rising at the occasion while facing the personal dilemma with courage and determination. The duo recently met at a pre-bout press conference and shared their thoughts about the bout.
Martin has been in a total of 58 bouts, boasting 49 wins with a huge 31 coming by way of knockout. The veteran American pounder has collected several titles in her hefty career and at different weight classes.
Christy, also known as ‘The Coalminer’s daughter’, is looking forward to leave the sport after grabbing her career’s 50th win and by engraving her name on the world title one more time.
It is this reason why in the recent press conference held at Downtown Club in Fresno, Martin exhibited her sheer determination at knocking out Mia.
Christy stated, “I am excited about this opportunity to get my 50th win against Mia St John to finish my career. I am honoured to fight for the WBC World Title at Table Mountain Casino and look forward to becoming a World Champion once again. This time I will KO Mia, that’s as good a guarantee as you get.”
The bout between two of the best female welterweights in the history of boxing has heightened the stakes manifold. Mia is entering the ring after the gap of almost two years whereas Christy is coming after lapse of almost a year.
The odds are in favour of Christy as she has a better win and above all intimidating knockout ratio. Mia, 45, also known as ‘The Knockout’, has been in a total of 59 bouts, boasting 46 wins with just 18 via knockout.
