Christel Boeljon roars to victory at Australian Ladies Masters
Christel Boeljon from the Netherlands stunned the crowd in the Australian Ladies Masters, snatching a victory by one stroke on Sunday, at Royal Pines, Golf Coast, Australia.
The Dutchwoman rumbled to the top of the leaderboard after firing a total 267. Moreover, the final round went amazingly well, as she scored a 4-under 68.
Boeljon had to face some resistance from her nearest rivals but she managed to hold her nerve on most of the holes.
The 24-year-old Dutch star was one stroke clear of So Yeon Ryu, who was standing strong as an overnight leader just hours ago.
Diana Luna from Italy, who finished second, was surprised at the dramatic twist in last round.
Another nearest rival was South Korean Kim Ha-neul, who unfortunately messed up a few holes, finishing tied for the second place.
The surprising aspect of Boeljon’s triump at Royal Pines was that she was not able to make the cut in the last three events that she participated in. Now with her latest success, she herself is in a little shock.
Unaware of her abilities on the course, the Dutchwoman registered a surprising game, making putts that sealed a victory for her. The win gave her a modest $75,000 prize.
She kicked off the final round by making a series of pars. Her putting was even better on the last day, as she avoided making too many careless strokes that could have marred her position.
She reeled off her first birdie on the par-4 7th hole.  She then parred the next two holes on the front nine.
On the back nine, she drained her second birdie on the 10th and strengthened her position on the leaderboard.
With another birdie on the 13th, she seemed to speed up her journey to the top. Although she shot one bogey on the back nine, she atoned for her mistakes and scored 3 more birdies.
Thrilled by her victory, Boeljon said she never though t of clinching a triumph in Australia. "I never guessed I'd be holding this trophy, it's very special".
She further said that kicking off a season by a win is something she has long sought. Now that the victory has been racked up, she said she can move ahead without having to worry about her previous lapses.
