My Fiance and I were looking for a Car when we came across a Chrysler Seabring Convertable. It looks and sounds nice just needs new brakes and there's a leak in a tire. It has 74,000 miles on it and a 2.6liter engine(if I remember correcty) My fiance couldn't see anythng wrong with the engine or hear anything wrong with it, and he know's vehicles really well(his step dad's a mechanic who's taught him alot about cars)

My Question is.. Are these good cars, and are there any issues with the engines going out after soso miles? they want 3500 for this car, bluebook value is like 5000 or so...I'd put the year at 98-2001.

Thanks!

  1. Don't get it, these cars have a serious problem with oil sludge, the engine might sound beautifully but it will go out suddenly and to replace the engine will cost more than the car itself. there's hundreds of lawsuits for this particular engine and that model of car.

  2. Well I had a Dodge Avenger which is pretty much the same car as those, just made by dodge and it was a pretty good car. I've also known lots of people who have had sebrings and they arent that bad.

But from what your saying, It sounds like your getting a deal. and it sounds really nice. The only thing I have bad to say about those cars is that if your wheel bearings go out, they cost alot but that normally doesnt happen if you drive the car decent. But yeah, It sounds like a great car. You should get it.

  3. do not get it. the engine is junk!!! its a 2.7L v6. just do a search on the web saying 2.7l sludge and u will see what i mean.

  4. I wouldn't get it if it has the 6 cylinder engine.  The 4 banger is fine.

I don't buy cars with automatic transmissions.  Manual transmission last hundreds of thousands of miles, are cheaper to replace if they break, and get better fuel economy.  I've had lots of trouble with automatic transmissions starting as low as 70,000 miles.  I own three cars currently, they're all 5 speed manuals, and all have over 200,000 miles.

  5. Have your fiance's dad take a good look at it. A good friend of mine has had very good luck with his Sebring sedan. Brakes are easily replaced. Brake shops in my area will do the job for $90 per axle. It the rotors or calipers need to be replaced it will cost more. The brakes shops make their money on these add on parts, so you need to have them prove that the old parts are bad.

The Sebring comes with a 2.4 litre dual overhead cam four cylinder or a 2.7 litre V6. If there are no leaks, no funny noises, nor smoke coming from the exhaust pipe, the engine is probably in good shape.

If the step dad is not around, pay a local mechanic to perform an inspection. If the seller won't let you take it to a mechanic, walk away and don't come back.
