Chu-Huan Yi eases past Divij Sharan to enter the main draw – Shimadzu Kyoto Challenger 2012
Taiwanese rising star, Chua-Huan Yi, pounced over the Indian competitor, Divij Sharan, in straight sets at All Japan Indoor Tennis Championships 2012 on Sunday. He joggled up a 7-5, 6-2 success against the Delhi-born to secure a place in the opening round at this synthetic court tournament taking place in Kyoto, Japan.
Yi, ranked 872nd in the South African Airways ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour, played his best tennis to dump the Indian booming star in 80-minute marathon. After earning this success, Yi booked a spot in the main draw of this event.
The 24-year-old smashed nine aces and fended off both breakpoints he encountered to smoothly keep his entire serves. He got the breakthrough near the end and bagged the opener by winning seven games to five. Yi produced a lower first serve share of 67 percent in contrast with Sharan’s 74 percent and exceptionally marked 19 out of 26 points on it.
The Taiwanese perfected his game in the follow-up set and after warding off the only breakpoint he faced, Yi easily swiped in entire serves. He sought six break chances and availed two of them to clinch the set with a 6-2 score line. The lower ranked clobbered a higher first serve share of 65 percent as compared to the Indian’s 61 percent and spectacularly marked 14 out of 15 points on it.
Yi will square off against the high spirited Australian, Michael Look, in the opening round.
Qualifier’s top seed, Riccardo Ghedin, faced a different fate. He assertively entered the Japanese carpet courts and pocketed the opener. However, the Italian lost his track afterwards and suffered a gruelling 6-3, 3-6, 4-6 loss against Australia’s Matthew Barton.
The world number 309 amazingly dusted away all five breakpoints he came across and capitalised on the lone break chance to pull out the opener by winning six games to three.
Barton, on the other side of net turned the tides towards his favour in the second set. He cashed in the only break chance and plucked entire serves to seal the equaliser with a 6-3 win.
The 26-year-old, Ghedin continued displaying dismal performance in the final set. He squandered the only break opportunity he produced and fended off six out of seven breakpoints he faced, eventually clinched the decider with a 4-6 shock.
Barton on the other side of net will next face the South African booming star, Raven Klaasen.
