Chuang/Govortsova battle past Benesova/Dulgheru to reach semis – New Haven Open 2011
Seeded at number three in the tournament, the pair of Chia–Jung Chuang from Chinese Taipei and Olga Govortsova of Bulgaria stood victorious in the clash against the unseeded combination of Iveta Benesova of Czech Republic and Alexandra
Dulgheru of Romania in the quarter-final of New Haven Open at Yale, on Wednesday afternoon.
Being the last stop before US Open, the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier-level event took place on the hard courts of the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center in New Haven, Connecticut, United States. Chuang and Govortsova registered
victory after a stiff contest from their opponents, settling the final scores at 4-6, 6-0, 10-7, to make it to the semi-final draws of the tournament.
Benesova and Dulgheru were off to a flying start in the contest and took early advantage by bagging the opening set but failed to sustain their momentum in the later parts of the game. The unseeded duo went through a drastic slump
in the second set, with Chuang and Govortsova breaking their serve on every single game to force their way back in the game. Chuang and Govortsova continued with their impetus in the decider and finally concluded victory after a close contest.
Chuang and Govortsova served with 63 per cent precision, coughing seven double faults in the game but they compensated very well for it by bagging 26 out of 34 first serve points to finish the contest on a winning note. Benesova
and Dulgheru also conceded four double faults in the match and converted one of their four break opportunities, while suffering three cracking serve breaks from the opponents.
The third seeded duo was off to a sloppy start in the opening set and dropped serve in the fifth game to let Benesova and Dulgheru into a 4-2 lead. Chuang and Govortsova failed to recover from the early damage done by the serve
break from their opponents and eventually lost the opening set at 4-6. However, Chuang and Govortsova made a tremendous comeback in the very next set, completely blowing away their opponents with authority. They broke Benesova and Dulgheru’s serve in every
game to seal the second set at 6-0, levelling the matchup with one set apiece.
Chuang and Govortsova continued with their good work in the decisive third set and bagged victory at 10-7 to move into the semi-final round to fight for a title shot in the final of New Haven Open at Yale.
