Chuang/Govortsova outplay Errani/Vinci to clinch the doubles title – New Haven Open 2011
In the enthralling doubles final of the New Haven Open at Yale, the third seeded duo of Chia-Jung Chuang from Chinese Taipei and Olga Govortsova of Bulgaria stood victorious against the Italian pair of Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci, to claim the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier-level title.
The contest was staged on the hard courts of the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center in New Haven, Connecticut, United States, with the third seeded team winning in straight sets 7-5, 6-2, to take the crown. It took just one hour and twenty five minutes of play for Chuang and Govortsova to wrap up victory at the last stop before the US Open.
The contest was off to a thrilling start in the opening set, with both pairs fighting tooth and nail to get the better of one another. Once getting hold of the opener, the third seeded pair raced through the second set to conclude a comprehensive victory in the end.
Despite of serving 72 per cent of serve on target, Chuang and Govortsova coughed seven double faults in the matchup, yet manoeuvring their way to victory in the end. They converted five of their nine break opportunities in the contest to come out as the winner, while the Italians cashed on just two of their 12 break chances, squandering away 10 precious break points to lose the matchup.
Errani and Vinci drew the first blood in the opening set, breaking their opponents’ serve in the second game to get into an early lead of 2-0. A quick reply was seen from Chuang and Govortsova, who broke the Italian serve twice in a row to take hold of the contest at 5-3. Errani and Vinci registered their second serve break of the day in the 10th game, only to be broken in the very next game to lose the first set at 5-7.
Once getting into their groove, Chuang and Govortsova exhibited some high quality tennis action in the second set to inch closer to victory. The third seeded duo coughed four double faults in the second set but reeled off 15 out of 20 first serve points to keep the upper hand in the game. Errani and Vinci frittered away four crucial serve points in the set to remain on their back foot throughout and never appeared in any sort of confidence. Chuang and Govortsova finished off the contest at 6-2, after nailing two more serve breaks to claim the doubles title at the New Haven Open at Yale.
