Chubby Chandler in a win-win situation with three major winners in his clientele
Agent Andrew Chandler, also known as “Chubby Chandler”, is currently having the best times of his life managing no fewer than three major champions at his International Sports Management (ISM) and is now eyeing to bag the fourth one.
The burly Chandler, who had been a professional golfer himself, is notoriously famous in the golfing circles and has known to provide invaluable insights to his clients, most of who have walked away with major titles in the past.
Chandler is currently managing the US Open champion Rory McIlroy, the recent Open champion Darren Clarke and the Masters winner Charl Schwartzel of South Africa.
Chandler believes that Lee Westwood, the current world number two and former world number one, has a strong chance of winning the last major of the season, the PGA Championship at Atlanta.
A former European Tour player, Chandler is the managing director of the ISM and suggested Clarke to take a break from his long winless campaign in professional golf and head out for a vacation. The suggestion turned out to be fruitful as Clarke went over
to win at Mallorca right after his return.
Chandler revealed that Clarke was almost on the verge of quitting the sport in April this year when Chubby advised him to take a break from mainstream golf.
“He was so low he thought about giving it up,” said Chandler. “It was the lowest I have ever seen him. He wasn't hitting the ball like he used to in Morocco, so I told him to take extra holiday. He went away for three weeks and came back refreshed.”
Westwood, who failed to make the cut at the difficult Links course is one of the favourites for the PGA Championship scheduled next month. The bookies in UK have touted him to lift the title and many of the golf critics are also of the view that long drives
is the key to winning at PGA and amply suits Westwood’s style of golf.
Open champion Clarke also supported Westwood’s bid for the PGA Championship and considers him to be one of the best bets in the event.
“Right now it’s been tough for Lee, obviously, with Rory winning and then me winning and stuff,” said Clarke. “But if I was a gambling man, I would have a substantial bet on Lee Westwood winning the PGA in Atlanta – I hope he does.”
Chandler’s success story has been one of those where the agents have contributed immensely in building up the momentum for the victory. Tiger Woods phenomenal success owes some part of it to his long standing relationship with Mark Steinberg who has been
his agent for several years.
The duo are still together although the International Management Group (IMG) decided to dump Steinberg a few months back and Woods eventually decided to follow Steinberg. The two associates are now weighing their options to joint Excel Sports Management
Company in the near future.
