Chun Seang Tan narrowly defeats Sergiy Shatenko in Men’s Singles second round of US Open GP Gold
Malaysia’s Chun Seang Tan reserved his berth in Men’s Singles round-of-16 but not before working extra hard against Canada’s Sergiy Shatenko in second round encounter at Yonex OCBC US Open GP Gold 2012 on Tuesday, July 3, in Los Angeles, USA.
Chun Seang, who has been positioned at number four in Men’s Singles seeding of US Open, had to stretch to his limit while playing against his gritty rival and he managed to win the battle with a close score on the board.
The higher ranked Chun Seang worked really hard on court as he employed all of his reserves to overpower his Canadian rival in straight games by consuming 38 minutes in the court.
Sergiy also put up thrashing performance in both games but failed to maintain his positive play at the ending points and lost the fight in 38 minutes with a respectable score.
Malaysian shuttler faced a tough opposition in opening rallies of first game as he failed to stop the aggression of his Canadian opponent.
Sergiy showed his tremendous class in opening half of first game and remained ahead of his higher ranked Malaysian opponent.
Chun Seang played quivering badminton and was down at 6-11 until the mid-game interval in first game.
After the interval, Chun Seang geared up his speed and played impressive badminton at net. His tumbling net shots coupled with deceptive pushes disturbed the flow of his opponent and he made the score levelled at 18-18.
At this crucial stage, the Canadian tried to take over the charge but failed to push his rival on back foot as Chun Seang was quick in taking the bird and he took the game with a tight score of 23-21.
In the second set, the Canadian again played superb badminton in opening rallies and remained close until 7-7 when Chun Seang took over the control and set up an 11-9 lead on the board.
After the interval, Chun Seang did not lose his grip over rallies and dictated his rival in all areas of the court. He kept an upper hand over Sergiy in the concluding phase and took the set by a margin of 21-18.
Chun Seang won this Men’s Singles battle in hard-fought straight sets with a decent score of 23-21 and 21-18.
