Chung Jae Sung, Lee Yong Dae crash out of London Olympics in disgraceful manner – Badminton News
Men’s Doubles experts Chung Jae Sung and Lee Yong Dae put below par performance in semi-finals against Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen and faced a woeful exit from London Olympics on August 4, 2012.
This crucial tussle kept both teams busy in Wembley Arena for three gruelling sets before ending with 17-21, 21-18 and 22-20 margin.
World Number one Korean duo, who was hot favourite in race of Olympic gold medal, shocked their nation by going down in the last two games of the match.
On the other hand, the Danish pair performed beyond expectations to land on a title berth in the mega event.
The opening game set the overall pace of match as both teams strived hard to gain an early advantage in match score position.
Jae Sung and Yong Dae, who were second seeded players of the tournament, prevailed in couple of consecutive rallies and started mounting pressure straight away in the beginning. They played positive badminton and kept the opposing team under control all
the way to half time.
They lost focus after the interval and allowed their challengers to narrow the gap. The twosome of Mathias and Carsten made best out of this opportunity and got into commanding position with few successive points.
The Korean shuttlers switched on the best at this stage and reinstated their supremacy before the game point situation.
They maintained a slight edge until last shot was played and bagged first set with favourable figure of 21-17.
However, it proved their last success in the mega event as the opposing team did not give them even a single chance to transform their 1-0 lead into a straight-set victory.
Mathias and Carsten, who jointly hold third spot in world ranking, did not lose heart after first set loss and counter-balanced the situation with a laudable effort.
This time they employed unusual tactics and confounded their competitors with a fine blend of power-packed campaigns and deceiving net play.
Though, they could not make significant difference in first half but they managed to hit the mark in second half of the game and won this set with 21-18 score on the board.
This revised status made third set consequential as both contenders snapped each other heels to avoid a woeful exit from London Games.
None of them could gain a permanent lead and match kept swinging between them until final moments.
This cliff-hanging tussle kept the audience glued to their chairs and they applauded this commendable show of skills.
Both teams were locked in a tense situation when Danish shuttlers unseated the Koreans by adding two points in the final total of 22-20.
This was end of road for Jae Sung and Yong Dae as they let the title berth slip from their hands with 1-2 defeat.
