Chunky says he will dismantle George Groves physically and mentally
Super middleweight WBA International titlist James “Chunky” DeGale has blasted rival George Groves (11-0, 9 KOs) in the latest episode between the two British fighters.
DeGale (8-0, 6 KOs) claimed he would dismantle Groves “physically and mentally,” in a fight and scolded him for earlier comments about taking DeGale’s title.
Recently Groves became the mandatory challenger for DeGale's super middleweight title.
“I see Groves has found his voice again now [that] I’m fighting Paul Smith. He always seems to pipe up when he can’t fight me. But when I’ve beaten Smith, I’ll give Groves the opportunity again to get knocked out,” DeGale confirmed.
DeGale, a native Londoner, is a former Olympic gold medallist. In recent years under the promotional guidance of Frank Warren he has become one of Britain’s biggest boxing prospects.
Groves is coming off a six round knock-out win over former Commonwealth gold medallist Kenny Anderson. The fight took place on the undercard for the “Best of Enemies” card featuring WBA heavyweight titlist David Haye and Audley Harrison.
Groves, an active blogger and fan favourite, is promoted by Hayemaker Promotions. In September he turned down an offer by Frank Warren to fight DeGale on Warren’s terms, and insisted instead on fighting DeGale at a venue of his promoter’s choosing.
DeGale poured on the insults, saying: "If I get to fight Groves then it will be a real pleasure shutting his mouth once and for all.
"He keeps using my name to get himself in the papers because, quite frankly, he's not going to get talked about talent wise. Anyone who saw his fight with Kenny Anderson would know that he's got about as much chance of beating me as he has winning a beauty
contest.”
DeGale will face Paul Smith (29-1, 15 KOs) on December 11. Despite the two being good friends outside of the ring, DeGale has emphasized he will not go easy on Smith, and will regret taking his British super middleweight title.
