Hello there! So I'm going to be studying abroad in Edinburgh this summer and I would love to be able to attend church service on Sundays. Are there any particularly good churches (Presbyterian) you would recommend?

Thanks a bunch! ^_^

  1. st giles(high st)its called a cathedral but its not as its presbytarian, but its very impressive and steeped in history, also greyfriers kirk(forrest rd)again, full of history, and canongate kirk,at bottom of high st(canongate, near scottish parliament)st cuthberts(west end of princes st,gardens side)

im actually catholic but have interest in churches, architecture etc, there are also many local church of scotland churches within all areas of edinburgh, enjoy your time in edinburgh!

  2. There are a good number of Church of Scotland churches in Edinburgh - wherever you stay, you will be within walking distance of at least one.

With such a choice, I would suggest that you try the nearest one and work from there.

Of the churches near the city centre, you might want to consider:

Edinburgh: High (St. Giles) - on the Royal Mile, but not one of my favorites!

Edinburgh: Duddingston  - In Duddingston itself, on the southern side of Holyrood Park. I know the Minister of this delightful Kirk

Edinburgh: St. Andrews and St Georges - in George Street, A Kirk with much history.

  3. The Presbyterian Church is very strong in Scotland, so I'm sure that you will find a church not to far away from wherever you are staying. Enquire at your uni, thay are bound to know their locations. Hope this helps you.

  4. I highly recommend Charlotte Chapel- its a great church and very central, (204 Rose Street) but it is baptist not presbyterian.

You could try New Restalrig church if you're only looking at Presbyterian churches. You can even 'try before you buy' by downloading a sermon or two from their website (see addresss below).

    hope this helps..

  5. You want the Church of Scotland, the established national church of Scotland, Presbyterian in form. The first Protestants in Scotland, led by Patrick Hamilton, were predominantly Lutheran. However, with the return of John Knox from Geneva, the Scottish Reformation came under the influence of Calvinism.
