Cicadas coming... now?

Hey, I live in fairfax Virginia and I keep spotting those brown cicada shells cracked open... but today as i was taking a walk i saw a thing that looked exactly like a cicada! It seemed as if it were dying because it was making a loud chirping noise and it was squirming around. I took it home and went on Yahoo images to find a cicada looked exactly like the one I've just found. The one I found had a green body (a little rough and beat up) , long wings (scratched wings) and bright green eyes. I looked up "Cicada" and found a match that looked exactly like it but not as worn out. I know the eyes are supposed to be orange, or red but this looked like one with green eyes... I also looked up the shells and they looked exactly like the ones I've found in my backyard...

I know it was just cicada season a couple of years ago but could they be coming now?

Thanks.

  1. There are several species of Cicadas.  The 17 year ones are what you should be seeing.  There are 3 yr 7 yr 13 yr & 17 yr Cicadas.  There may be more varieties than that.  Sometimes, a few years of them happen all at once & it is so cool watching them.

  2. Yes, the cicadas are here after being Underground for eighteen years.  We had Them real bad.  They won't bother Your plants.   They lay their eggs in the trees, then When They hatch, The babes fall to the ground, and they burrow deep in the ground for eighteen Years.  They are real dumb bugs....Their only purpose is to come out from underground for two weeks, mate, then They die.  They make a god awful sound for that time. and their shells are everywhere.

  3. They are always around. Some years more than others. I wouldn't worry about them coming back into "season" just yet. Usually the weather channel or the news updates us about every 4-6 years about them. I hope that helps!

  4. they were probably some early birds or some rare type of cicadas; besides cicada season doesn't came for about another 12 years
