Question:

Cigar Box Question?

I'm making a cigar humidor, and have a question about the box.

I'm thinking about keeping the cigars (Montecristo No. 5) in their original box, then putting that in a large tupperware container and putting my humidifier in also.

Every site says to use Spanish Cedar for the box, but I'm wondering if I can use the original cigar box, and if I need to treat it in any way so it doesn't take in moisture.

Can anyone help me out?

  1. As long as the humidor has a good seal, you can keep them in or out of the original box. There are small humidifiers that will fit in your humidor to keep the humidity up, I like the tube shaped ones that have the 'diaper gel' in them, they're called Humistat. Use distilled water, you dont really need those hydrating solutions. You want to keep them at 70 degrees and 70 % humidity, so you need a thermometer/hygrometer also. Keep them in a warm place in your house, but not in the sun. A closet shelf on a warm wall will usually do!

  3. I'm not really sure, but I don't think that'll work. I bought my husband a humidor last year and paid a good $300 dollars for it and t's not big, just your average personal size. When you close & open it, it makes a type of suction seal, that may be a trick to it. But, there is a reason that it costs so much, so I don't think it's that easy to make a good one at home or they probably wouldn't cost so darn much.
