Question:

Ciggarette sales?

I currently work in my local store sorting out the papers and magazines in the morning. But I want to have extra hours, so I want to work behind the till, but the boss says that I cant because of the 'New' ciggarette law.

Because the new law in Wales is that you have to be 18 to buy ciggarettes, but you can still smoke at 16, he cant give me work. I spoke to someone else who works up there and he said that you can still serve them to people, even if you are under 18.

I just want to know what the 'real' situation is with all this.

Please help me, thanks.

  1. Count 729 days or so, by the time you cross 18 yrs. of age to sell Cigarettes.

Till than, you sell other FMCGs.

Enjoy your job, and earn respectfully.

  2. haha, ur in luck! i work behind the ciggs counter and yup, laws have changed to 18. im not sure why he wont let you work behind the counter tho unless ur actually under 18 because that would be a totally different matter. if you are, it would mean higher risks for the company/shop that you work at cus if you get caught out, you will get a fine as well as the shop and it'll be put in ur criminal record.

  3. he is completely wrong there is no age limit for selling cigarettes in a shop and to further add to this question you no longer have to be eighteen to work behind the bar in a pub neither,

you can in fact be 14 or even less the only stipulations there as to be someone over eighteen to supervise

  4. I'm pretty sure you have to be 18 to sell smokes. I've bought them before and the cashier had to call someone older over to ring me up. You could try doing that.
